Just to be clear, I actually made that comment not about the 1955 NYPO performance, memorable though it is, but about a 1959 performance which Mitropoulos gave in Cologne https://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2004/Jan04/mitropoulos.htm
Subsequently, I heard the searing 1981 live account conducted by Klaus Tennstedt. https://musicwebinternational.com/2025/08/mahler-symphony-no-6-london-philharmonic-orchestra/
I think that has precedence over either Mitropoulos performance, not least because Tennstedt observes the first movement exposition; Mitropoulos omits in both recordings.
