I have been aware of the late Mr Tony Duggan’s extensive reviews of recordings of the Symphonies of Gustav Mahler for some time and have been taking my time to read them all.
Recently I read his reappraisal of the Mahler Sixth Symphony recordings.
What a mind…and guide!!
Mr Duggan’s statement below
“”many treat it as an excuse by the conductor for romantic excess and the kind of mannered intervention it might seem to court and which many seem ready to indulge””
This is all too true of many commentator’s,conductors and audiences, and that also bedevils the Deryck Cooke performing version of the Mahler Tenth symphony.
The many references to Alma Mahler’s opinions and what Mahler supposedly said are always to be questioned,as veracity of remembrance was not a skill she possessed.
Anyone that can remove part of a musical manuscript that was not flattering to herself cannot be trusted.
A wonderful hour or two absorbing Mr Duggan’s thoughts on the Mahler Sixth symphony which will occupy me for some time.
Now to access his thoughts on Mahler ten.
Many thanks to Musicweb International for keeping Mr Duggan’s absorbing thoughts available for all to access.

I have removed that quotation, Steve - no problem.

This fine new restoration was posted today. In his review, John Quinn said: "It’s quite the most shattering performance of this incredible symphony that I’ve ever heard (or hope to hear.)"
