Review of Bruckner Mass No 1 and Psalm 146 Posted by John Proffitt on May 14, 2026, 5:16 pm Many thanks for William Kreindler's complimentary review of my recent recordings, including the rarely-heard - but quite compelling - Psalm 146. In that performance, he rightly praises alto Sarah Dyer, who has a beautiful, but comparatively short role in the Psalm. Is it possible he was actually thinking of soprano Krista Renée Pape, who has the most extensive role throughout the Psalm, including the opening movement "Lobet den Herrn", the Arioso "Der Herr nimmt auf die Sanften", and the florid "Amen" at the work's conclusion? But most importantly, Mr Kreindler does a great service, in my opinion, in helping publicize this unknown, but superb, early symphonic choral work by Anton Bruckner.

Somehow, we've had this recording for a fairly long time at our house. I agree that Psalm 146 is a surprisingly accomplished work, but my wife was disappointed by some of the more conventional writing in it. For instance, Bruckner would modulate to a certain key, and she would say to me, "I knew he was going to do that!". ;-) BTW (although a little off the topic), I'm very thankful for your work on so many 5Ch or 5.1Ch releases, but are you involved (or going to be involved) in any immersive recordings (Dolby Atmos or Auro 3D) now or in the near future? In any case, best of luck!

John I apologize, John - maybe I gave you the wrong impression when I said we had had your recording "for a fairly long time". I meant for more than a year - we got the recording you made in Houston shortly after it was released. Believe me, I've never heard the Schaller recording. (And, strangely enough, I've heard very few of Schaller's Bruckner recordings.) Anyway, I'm still interested in your involvement in any past or future "immersive" recordings (Dolby Atmos or Auro 3D), if you care to "spill the beans" on this subject. But if not, that's fine too. In any case, congratulations on your past accomplishments, and best wishes with your future projects!

Re: Review of Bruckner Mass No 1 and Psalm 146 Posted by John Proffitt on May 22, 2026, 10:06 pm, in reply to "Review of Bruckner Mass No 1 and Psalm 146" Again, I voice my pleasure - and that of Bruckner aficionados everywhere - for the positive review of this first volume from the Bruckner Bicentennial as released by the Bruckner Society America and HDTT, containing two symphonic choral works, Mass No. I in d-minor and Psalm 146 in A-major. Both of these works deserve more extensive exposure, and this review from William Kreindler accomplishes this! I would also commend to Mr. Kreindler for possible review the second volume in this series, featuring two rarities, the Symphonic Prelude in c-minor WAB 297 of c.1876, performed by full orchestra; and the last completed work from the composer, Helgoland WAB 71 - a cantata from 1893 for large orchestra and 4-part male chorus - here heard in transcription for pipe organ. And finally in this Volume from the BSA and HDTT, a collection of Bruckner's choral motets excellently performed by the Chorus Regi Cantorum of Houston.
