When you can't use your stomach muscles or back. I finally found out that our patio chairs which were metal with a spring-type rocker were comfortable if I put their cushion on them and they made it easier to stand up because of the spring action. I sat outside a lot and had my husband bring one inside to sit in. After the second surgery, my husband got a lift chair and that made it so much easier. We don't normally use that chair but I don't think I want to be without a lift chair in the future just in case we need it. Still getting up out of bed pulled my stitches loose and it took 6 months to heal because it kept pulling when I would sit up.
