Sticking my two cents in from experience. I feel that your dad should get the lift chair before the surgery. Cutting through the muscles in the stomach area makes it hard to scoot or lean forward, so people tend to pull themselves up to the edge of a chair to get up. That results in pulling stitches loose. He also needs one of those ropes to help him sit up in bed, even if he has an adjustable bed. He may end up sleeping in that recliner when he gets home. I hope he doesn't need an ostomy bag; many don't, but it is not the end of the world. The biggest thing is changing when you are supposed to and keeping it clean to avoid infections. After getting used to the difference, it is not a big deal. My next door neighbor had bowel cancer and had an 18" section removed. She didn't require an ostomy and lived a normal life, working well into her 80s because she wanted to and she could. Wishing him the best.
I am so glad that you found Ray. He's a keeper.
