Ironically it is the second in line to the thrones of the new generation of European Royalty that have been celebrated in such a splendid and festive manner and not the first in line (Princess of Orange, Duchess of Brabant and soon the Princess of Asturias).
Queen Margrethe wore the Poire Pearl tiara, which is one of her finest pieces. And she combined this with pieces from the Crown Jewels that are not seen that often. Ok, it was not the Diamond necklace used at Crown Prince Frederik's wedding. But what she wore are still invaluable historic pieces and they happened to include ruby and diamonds which we all know is the colour of the Danish flag.
Mette-Marit wore what she always wears - so she would have worn this no matter what and not because this banquet was "less important".
Queen Anne-Marie wore a piece from her mother, the great grandmother of Prince Christian. So it probably had more affectional value than any of her other pieces. She also wore this to the gala in Sweden last month and I don't think that event can be called a "Gala B".
The Duchess of Brabant wore her own tiara at the banquet in Oslo for Princess Ingrid Alexandra, another gala for a second in line.
I actually think that the Royals use other criteria when chosing the jewels they wear; what goes with the outfit; historical connection and things like that. I could be wrong of course.
