If you look at the 1911 coronation portrait of Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, you can see her family order of Queen Victoria and Albert is quite small. At least in this orders’ case, it was divided into classes, with the lower classes featuring less ornate design.

Apparently larger sizes of QEII order were issued to her grandmother (Queen Mary), her mother (QEQM) and her sister (Princess Margaet).
Thank you Bryce for starting this thread. I will respond to parts of it separately.
According to Royal Service Vol II, there were just two of the large size RFO of QEII made and presented to Queen Mary and to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
It was after the death of Queen Mary that Princess Margaret acquired the larger one.
