    Dear all,;

I thank for your answer concerning the two sapphire and diamonds tiaras owned by Queen Elizabeth II and not worn by her.

I am treaty sure that we can of an origin of the tiara with Menkes.

I just would like to add my own opinion about Field and Menkes.

We all know that there were mistakes in their boocks.

However, see below my comments :

    1° In Field :

    - the diamond and emerald necklace from Canada : it is true ;
    - the sapphire and diamond necklaces : are also true ;
    - She also said the truth concerning amethyst, aquamarine (with the bracelet), with ruby...therefore, most of jewels descrided exists despite mistakes made of their origins..

    - Menkes :

    - She said that Queen Elizabeth owns Queen Alexandra's diamond collet necklace : it is true
    - the double greek key pattern tiara was also described by Menkes.

Therefore to me the two authors do not do mistake with the existence of the jewels but do mistake with the origin of the jewels.

: I would suggest that the confusion comes from
: the sale of the Grand Duchess Vladimir's
: tiara in 1921. Elena Vladmirova inherited
: the tiara and sold it that year. I suspect
: the article is simply confusing the events.
    :
: That said, it is quite possible that Queen
: Mary purchased a tiara that had come from,
: been given by, or had some other association
    : with the Dowager Empress.
    :
: The lack of records and the confusion of
: stories makes it difficult to separate fact
    : and fiction.

: No, there is no publicly known picture of
    : any
: wearer of this tiara, apart from Queen Mary
    : and Princess Margaret.
    :
: This blog states that Princess Nicholas of
: Greece put this tiara up for auction in 1921
: and that Queen Mary bought it at that
    : auction.

    :
: Is there any source to suggest this is true?
: Afaik, there is no auction record for the
: bandeau. And it does not make sense that
: Princess Elena should sell a tiara that once
: belonged to her aunt. Also it is known that
: Queen Mary purchased several jewels
: privately. Why would she buy at auction,
: when she knows the seller, and a private
: transaction would be cheaper and more
    : discreet?

: I always thought the piece was one of the
: pieces from the dowager-empress' legacy sold
: by her daughter. The tiara itself could
: easily have been outside Russia once the
    : Revolution started. Isn't there a picture
: with the empress wearing the tiara?
    :

: I do not know that i would say that it was
    : "well documented". The official
: list of jewels sold by Hennell's may not
: have listed any tiaras, but that does not
: preclude a private sale outside of the
: Hennell's listing. In fact, I believe that
: there were a few private transactions after
: the Dowager Empress's death, so it is quite
: possible that a sapphire tiara could have
: changed hands. Certainly, the Dowager
: Empress had sapphires/pearls comprising the
: best pieces with her and it would not have
: been out of the question for her to have had
: a sapphire tiara with her "just in
: case" of something official occuring
: during the way whilst she was in Kiev.
    :

: But here we go again with another
    : misconception!
: The tiara with the single sapphire (first
: owned by Queen Mary)has no factual
: connection with Marie Feodorevna. Its seems
: to be well documented that the Empress fled
: Russia without any of her tiaras..
    :

: I was hoping the saphire tiara of Maria
: Feodorovna would be loaned to the Duchess of
: Cambridge. It is a beautifull historic piece
: but not too grand for a young woman.

: I think, had there been an additional
: substantial sapphire tiara that HMQEII would
: not have purchased the necklace that
: eventually became her sapphire tiara. I
: would love to believe that we're several
: sapphire tiaras languishing about, but HM's
: thrifty nature makes me feel she would have
: worn what she already had at her disposal.
: Pity we've not seen that lovely bandeau
: since Princess Margaret wore it. It would
: have been lovely had Diana paired it with
    : her sapphire choker.

    : Dear all,
    :
: The royal jewels by Suzy Menkes Page 53
    : (Edition 1988, section Majestic Mary) :
    :
    : "The Empress Marie's superb sapphires -
: two tiaras, a brooch and a pearl choker-
: were inherited by the Queen. Princess
: Michael of Kent has a large diamond brooch,
: the Gloucesters a tiara and Princess
    : Margaret a sapphire"
    :
: have you seen photos of the Empress Maria
: wearing sapphire tiaras. We could therefore
: find the two sapphire tiaras owned by Queen
    : Elizabeth II.
    :
: It might be the same sapphire tiaras
    : mentionned by Leslies Field
