Re: The Coty tiara Archived Message

Posted by Arthur on September 10, 2014, 8:08 am, in reply to "Re: The Coty tiara"

I have noted in my files that the Coty emerald tiara was sold by the Countess of Paris in 1996. But I do not remember where I got this information.

The only pictures I have of the Countess of Paris with the Coty tiara are from the pre-wedding ball of Prince Frederick of Wurttemberg and Marie of Wied in November 1993:

I do not know if this picture of the Countess, with her hairdresser, the famous Alexandre de Paris, fixing the Coty tiara in the Countess' hair, is from the same or from another occasion:

In the 1950s/1960s/1970s, the Countess of Paris almost exclusively wore the beautiful sapphire and diamond parure of Queen Marie-Amélie of the French (she loaned her other jewels to her daughters for the various royal events they attended), but the Count of Paris sold the sapphire parure to the Louvre Museum in 1985.

After that date, she could have worn the pearl, sapphire and diamond parure, also from Queen Marie-Amélie, that the Count of Paris sold at auction only in the late 1990s. But I think this parure had been loaned to the Count and Countess' daughter-in-law, Marie-Thérèse Duchess of Montpensier, who had worn it regularly during the 1960s/1970s. So the Countess of Paris may have thought unappropriate to wear it again? Or the fact that the Count and Countess of Paris were de facto separated at that time possibly made it impossible for the Countess to wear this parure, which was not her property, but her husband's.

She also had, until her death, her diamond Art Déco bracelet/bandeau.

I do not know why she decided not to wear one of her remaining tiaras. Maybe she just wanted to try something grander?

: Madame wore the Coty tiara in 1993 at the
: pre-wedding of Princess Marie zu Wied &
: duke Friedrich of Württemberg. So she still
: had the tiara. But in 1991 she wore the
: loaned pearl tiara and in 1988 she wore
: another loaned diamond tiara at the
    : pre-wedding of the Württemberg / Waldburg
: Zeil wedding. I have no explanation for it.

: For the wedding of her Grandson Heir of
: Wurtenberg, why didn't the Countess of
: Paris wear her Coty tiara with emeralds
: instead of a loan tiara.
: When did Princess Chantal buy this tiara to
    : her Mother?
: Is there a picture of the Countess wearing
    : this tiara?
    : Great thanks for answering.
: Lorenzo , wonderful pic of Princess isabelle
    : with this tiara !

: This pearl and diamond tiara never belonged
    : to
: the Countess of Paris, but was loaned to her
: by the French jeweller Chaumet, to whose
: collection this tiara belongs. As far as I
: know, the Countess of Paris has publicly
: worn this tiara only once (though she was
: also depicted on at least two painted
: portraits with this tiara, but it could be
: another example of artistic license).
    :
: The tiara was made by Joseph Chaumet circa
    : 1950.

    :
: Therefore, I am not sure there is a
: Brazilian connection with this tiara.

: Lorenzo, I know very little about Madame's
: jewels. Could you explain why you call the
: tiara a Brazilian pearl and diamond tiara?
    : Many thanks.

: Princess Isabelle wore a brazilian pearl and
: diamond tiara with this green dress at the
: wedding of her grandson Philip, duke of
: Wurtemberg with duchess Marie-Caroline von
: Bayern at Nymphenburg prewedding ball.

    : Thanks Lorenzo,
: There was a glittering Event of the past
: with the Countess de Paris and Baroness
: Nadine de Rotschild. Both Ladies wore a
: similar white and green evening dress. Did
: the Countess wear the Coty Tiara ?

: Obviously, the earrings and brooch come from
    : the tiara

    : Hello Maria-Olivia,
    :
: indeed, Princess Chantal seems to be a fine
: amateur of historic jewels. Her husband,
: Baron François-Xavier de Sambucy de Sorgues,
: seems to be a very wealthy man, which can
    : help, too.
    :
: On these pictures (the small one from Corbis
: Images, the larger one taken by myself when
: I attended Prince Jean and Princess
: Philomena's wedding in Senlis on 2 May
: 2009), the bracelet is not visible. But we
: can see very clearly the emerald and diamond
: earrings and brooch (of whom I very strongly
: suspect that they were made from elements of
: the late Countess of Paris' Coty tiara,
: which was bought by Princess Chantal from
: her mother prior to her death) and the
    : diamond "Southern Cross" square
: brooch from the Princess of Joinville, here
: pinned as a clasp in front of Princess
    : Chantal's jacket.
    :
    :
    :
    :
: The following picture from Zimbio (that I
: have published earlier in the thread about
: the brooches worn by pair) shows that
: Princess Chantal wore that day a large
: bracelet, possibly of diamonds, and of which
: you suspect it could be the Art Deco diamond
    : bandeau/bracelet presented as a wedding gift
: to the Countess of Paris in 1931. But the
: picture is not HQ or close-up pictures to be
    : sure.
    :
    :
    :
: Actually, I think it is not the Countess of
: Paris's tiara. I have found in my files a
: picture posted on this board by EricVdV, who
: was also present in Senlis on that day. As
: it is one of EricVdV's personal pictures, I
: do not feel allowed to post it here in full.
: I hope he will forgive me to post this
: cropped fragment of this picture, focusing
: on the bracelet. As you can see, the
: distinctive treillice motifs of the Countess
: of Paris' tiara is not visible here, which
: makes me think these are two different
    : bracelets.
    :
    :
    :
: I hope this can help.
    :
    : Best wishes,
    :

    : Dear Arthur,
: You send an interesting picture of Princess
: Chantal at the Duke of Vendome's wedding.
: She wears part of the Coty jewels she bought
    : from he mother.
: She wears also the Filon bracelet (1931)
: which is the inheritance of her brother
: Prince Michel Count of Evreux.
: Do you think she bought it ?
: She is a jewel lover as she has owns also
: jewels from Prince Waldemar of Denmark .
