If the box dates from the time when the necklace was made for the Empress (and especially if the impression in the box matches the design of the necklace) that would increase the value of the jewel to many collectors, even though it can be proved that it was not part of the crown jewels. Unfortunately, financial considerations are often considered more important than historical accuracy. --Previous Message-- : You didn't take a picture of the necklace and : the red leather box ? Quite strange it´s : displayed with this box as we know for sure : the necklace was not part of the french : crown collection : Empress Eugènie had an impressive personal : collection of jewels. A little part was sold : in 1872 in London at Christies. The list is : in the famous book "joyaux de la : couronne de France" by François Morel : : --Previous Message-- : This beautiful necklace (which is far more : glittering in reality than on these : pictures) was sold at auction by Christie’s : on 19 October 2005: : : : http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/lot/an-antique-ruby-diamond-and-pearl-necklace-4577969-details.aspx?from=salesummary&intObjectID=4577969&sid=b39a5c23-ae17-4197-8a3d-77b7e1a42607 : : : : Here is the necklace as it is displayed at : the Biennale, at Martin du Daffoy's stand: : : : : : The attribution to Empress Eugenie seems : uncertain. Strangely, the necklace is : accompanied by a red leather fitted case, : stamped 'Diamants de la Couronne' (Crown’s : Diamonds). But this necklace was never : accounted among the French Crown Jewels : (which, by the way, belonged to the French : State, and not to Empress Eugenie : personally), and does not appear in the : disastrous sale of the Crown Jewels in 1887. : : : --Previous Message-- : Hello, : : I went to the Biennale yesterday. It was a : delight for the eyes, in all the sections of : the Biennale (jewellery, but also furniture, : paintings, sculptures...), and also a : considerable frustration (why on earth was I : not born a billionaire, to be able to : purchase so beautiful things? ) : : Several exhibitors allowed visitors to take : pictures, while others did not. : : Regarding jewellery, I tend to agree with : Lorenzo’s opinion. Cartier’s stand was very : interesting, but as for the style of the : jewels, my favour goes without hesitation to : Martin du Daffoy (a jewel retailer, who : sells jewels from the 18th, 19th and early : 20th centuries – so a very classical style). : Of course, this is just a matter of personal : taste. : : Several royal or aristocratic jewels are on : display at this Biennale, for each of which : I will dedicate a post in response to the : present post. : : : --Previous Message-- : This is not the best pieces I've seen !! : Many : royal jewels like empress Eugénie diamond : and rubis necklace-tiara, the gorgeous : diamond and sapphire necklace of the duchess : of Segovia, a double row of natural pearl : once belonging to queen Elena of Italy, the : Cartier snake bracelet of princess Mathilde, : an indian engraved 150 carats emerald or the : beautiful calcedony set of Wallis and so : many more that were much more beautiful than : the new Cartier tiara though the pearl is : gorgeous ! : : --Previous Message-- : I am hoping that some posters might be able : to : go to (or have been to) the Paris Biennale : Des Antiquaires. If so, I would be most : interested in reading a personal evaluation : of the pear shaped pearl, formerly belonging : to Queen Mary, which has now been : incorporated into a tiara/necklace by : Cartier. : : : : : : : : : : :
