As I see it, Catherine represents the monarch and the United Kingdom at major diplomatic and domestic events and on high-profile international visits to the United States, Commonwealth countries, and soon, India, as her husband is second in line to the throne and taking a large public role. It doesn't matter that she isn't yet Princess of Wales--she's not prevented from wearing good pearls or from choosing other jewelry that (whatever its intrinsic worth) has some distinction of design and presence. There are so many excellent British jewelry designers who work in a range of materials. I'm sorry to see Catherine wear so much mass-marketed jewelry, tiny pendants and ear charms and the like. Even if she were a businesswoman, she'd be well advised to skip the little pendants and to adopt a more grownup look with day jewelry… it's puzzling to me.

: IMO you compare apples to pears, Honor. Mary
: is The Crown Princess of Denmark with her
: own court, while Catherine is the wife of
: the heir to the heir. The two ladies are not
: in the same position. In my eyes, is it only
: understandable that The Duchess of Cambridge
: sports in her position less costly
: jewellery than the Crown Princess of
: Denmark. But The Duchess has proven already
: several times, that she knows how to
    : sparkle!

: Princess Mary was 34 at the time of this
: photo--the same age that the Duchess of
: Cambridge is now. I'm struck by how much
: more elegant, mature, and composed Mary
: already looked in her earliest years as
: Crown Princess, compared to Catherine.
: Mary's hairstyle, tailoring, and expertly
: restrained maquillage all help. But her
: jewels (both modern and traditional) play an
: important role. They are of a scale, worth,
: and design that are very flattering, and
: more important, add a great deal of
: presence. Wish Catherine would get some
: better advice on her day jewelry. For day
: engagements she still seems to wear tiny,
: fiddly pieces that are branded, girlish, and
: stamped out by the thousands… they tend to
    : bring her ensembles down.

: I believe that the necklace is cultured
    : South
: Sea pearls. The size and colour of the
    : pearls are characteristic.
    :
: She has been wearing the necklace since one
: of her early Christmases as Crown Princess.
    :
: The Queen's large pearl necklace would be
: much more valuable as it has large natural
    : pearls.
    :
: CP Mary has worn this necklace since at
    : least 2006

: She also wore it for the reburial of the
: Dowager Empress of Russia in September 2006.
