That dumb photobucket service is acting up today and was also yesterday so I will wait until another time to post illustrations of some gifts that went with that newspaper from the Library of Congress.
For now, I will just type short quoations about some gifts that were given to Prince Charles of Denmark and Princess Maud of Wales on their wedding day.
From "The Sun" (New York City, N.Y.) dated August 10, 1896:
**One necklace. It's made of 38 solitaire diamonds (all old mine stones) of unusual size and brilltancy. (Gift from the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark).
**One necklace. It's a neckband (is it meant as a choker?) of gold filigree, set with small diamonds in individual settings, pendant from narrower bands of gold, set with diamonds, which form the setting for solitaire diamonds, varying in size from 3 carats to 1/2 a carat. Pendant from the filigree are of 9 pear-shaped turquoises on either side of central stone and are matched to a nicety in size and weight. (Gift from the Duke and Duchess of York, the Duke and Duchess of Fife, and Princess Victoria of Wales)
**Diamond and Pearl Airgitte. From the golden base, studded with diamonds, rose a number of feather plumes, mingled with which were 5 sprays of large-sized diamonds, 3 golden wires mounted with pearls of great size, and 2 golden wires upon which were mounted with diamonds and pearls. (Gift from the Baroness de Hirsch).
**One bracelet. It's set with a magnificent ruby taken from the Hohenzollern collection. The ruby was set in a locket which contained a miniature of the emperor. (Gift from the German Emperor, cousin of the bride).
**One bracelet. It's set with an emerald. (Gift from the Dowager German Empress, an aunt of the bride).
**One diamond tiara. Mr. Alfred Rothschild personally selected diamonds to be put into the tiara. (Gift from Mr. Alfred Rothschild and Mr. & Mrs. Leopold de Rothschild).
**One Bible and a jewel casket from the Young Women's Christian association. Personal gift to Prince Charles of Denmark on his marriage to Princess Maud of Wales.
**One toliet bag. It's made of green Morocco leather lined with moire antique silk. The mountings and fittings were of ivory and crystal in gold plate, every piece having the crest of Wales and the bride's monogram. (Gift from the Princess of Wales to her daughter)
**The wedding ring was of pure Welsh gold from the Transfnydd Mines and was put inside the massive silver casket.
When the photobucket service goes all right again, I will post the illustrations here for several of these gifts....although not for every gift, though.
