I'd expect the Princess Royal to look as below when on horseback. But I don't see any opportunity for her to change out of any part of that uniform, for indoors. Would she remove that hat? I'm not sure. She might be bareheaded indoors. An added tiara would look odd!

I had expected her to be with the Princess of Wales and her two younger children, the duke and duchess of Edinburgh and their children and with her own husband and children in the family box. In that scenario she would be in a gown, diadem and possibly even a robe. As gold stick she'll wear the uniform and hat to go with it. I do wonder however about the coronet royals and peers put on their head when the king and queen are crowned. Would Anne combine the coronet with this uniform? She would have to take off the hat. A final option would be for her to attend the coronation in a dress, robe, diadem and coronet and like the king and queen retreat after the ceremony. The king will have to change his outfit so maybe the Princess Royal will do the same for the ride back. I would prefer her with her husband, younger brother Edward and Sophie in a carriage though. I think the trouble with this coronation is that we have the images of both the coronations of George VI and Elizabeth II. Both of them were grand events but of a different age. Charles seems to be focused on being a modern monarch. For a man in his 70's possibly not the smartest choice. I fear for those of us familiar with the previous 20th century coronations the event in a week might be disappointing. The glamour and grandeur of the previous events will have been exchanged for inclusivity and equality. If they really scrap the idea of other royals and nobles using coronets the one thing that reminded the newly anointed and crowned monarch that he is only the primus inter pares has been lost. Previous Message I've seen pics of HRH as Gold Stick in Waiting riding astride in white breeches and thigh boots - which would not be appropriate for inside the Abbey I think. Imagine the noise she would make walking down the aisle! Also seen a pic of her, standing, in trousers and ordinary shoes presumably, which would look much better inside the Abbey. Riding sidesaddle ["astride" edited out] is very unlikely for the Princess Royal but we never know. She could surprise us but I think the long skirt is not suited to walking because it is a strange shape. Not sure.

Charles should be commended for bringing the monarchy into the 21 century as much as possible. Hundreds of people dressed up in Medieval robes and coronets is just not very 2023. How can anyone in his right mind think that we would see an exact repeat of the lavish and very long 1953 coronation? The essence of the age old ceremony has been preserved, the Medieval venue is the same albeit less overcrowded but everything else, thank God, has been brought into the 21 century, including an AC ride to the Abbey in an Australian made carriage! I suspect the King and Queen will be dreading most the ride back in that terribly uncomfortable golden carriage but at least it will be a relatively short distance. After this final ride they should seriously consider permanently retiring that 4 tonnes weighing golden monstrosity to a museum. All existing monarchies have evolved over the centuries they exist. I do think you are taking things a bit too far. Part of the attraction of the UK monarchy is it splendour. The coronation is unique and an ancient ritual. The idea of simply cutting the coronets for other royals and peer(else)s to me is loosing something very essential to the monarchy of the UK. Not just the king and queen wear crowns, all peers and peeresses do, reminding every sovereign of the Magna Carta and that the sovereign may be elevated but has limits to their regnal power. An old tradition but also very apt to modern life where the monarch has to listen to people elected in office by the citizens of the kingdom. Wanting to wear coronets has nothing to do with reminding the monarch about the Magna Carta (seriously?) but rather an eagerness among some peers to show their presumed higher rank among their fellow citizens in a equalitarian society with a well functioning democracy and vibrant meritocracy. I do recommend one and all to except that the monarchy today is nothing more than a quaint cultural remnant of days gone by and like the aristocracy merely a trustee of the past. Let's not overdo it, shall we. That does not mean I do not appreciate a bit of royal stage play now and then but let's keep it real. Your opinion but not a fact. I find it one of the most beautiful aspects of the UK coronations. It shows that in the UK the monarch never succeeded to go from primus inter pares to autocrat. With many of the peers chosen to play a role being life peers your preconceived ideas about the peerage (something else than the nobility on the continent) are very far off. Many of them have been chosen for their long contribution to the UK in politics or on other social issues. Those life peers are the equivalent of senators in many other countries would you talk in a similar way about the members of the Dutch First Chamber? What you seem to forget is that in the theatre of state there is meaning and history behind little details and it's not just another staging of an old or famous play. With a lot of meaning and history behind much of what makes up a 1000 year old tradition those trying to alter it must be aware of what they keep and what they want to cut out. Im wondering who showed them their invitations. I doubt it's the foreign royals and assume it's mainly people who have been invited as part of representing the public. It's no surprise their dress code will be as you wrote. Im wondering if the UK Royals will adhere to that dress code as it would clash with the outfits of the king and queen. I also think the foreign royals might be wearing something a little more formal. I think that would look odd though, a cordoned off section of foreign royals in gowns and tiaras adjacent to the throngs of hats, pearls, and day dresses. I think it’s best to be consistent and simply apply the day dress code across the board, including the royal family, leaving just the king and queen in grand attire. I'd suggest there could have been different editions of that accompanying information according to category of guest. I doubt that all the honoured volunteers and so forth would be expected to appear in "formal wear or uniform". Lounge suits perhaps? I don't know the details of this sort of etiquette. Torkel - you probably do? Royal guests could well have received a different edition stating "decorations" etc and so on. In that way guest royals could demonstrate their support of the King.

I think it will look very odd on pics (for example Group pics) when there are King an Queen with full robes tiaras etc. and all others in short gowns with hats and morning suit. Traditions are often not linear. The tradition of wearing these gilded coronets is relatively new. Many royal traditions and practises were (re)invented in the 19th century. The staged and televised investiture of Charles as Prince of Wales in Caernarfon Castle is a good example. In any case the practise that Peers wear coronets at the coronation predates the time of the modernisation of the Peerage system and certainly the appointment of many of today's life peers. They don't own a Coronet! The ones who are now moaning they want to wear their robes and coronets just happen to be hereditary peers from old 'aristocratic' families.... Previous Message Charles should be commended for bringing the monarchy into the 21 century as much as possible. Hundreds of people dressed up in Medieval robes and coronets is just not very 2023. How can anyone in his right mind think that we would see an exact repeat of the lavish and very long 1953 coronation? The essence of the age old ceremony has been preserved, the Medieval venue is the same albeit less overcrowded but everything else, thank God, has been brought into the 21 century, including an AC ride to the Abbey in an Australian made carriage! I suspect the King and Queen will be dreading most the ride back in that terribly uncomfortable golden carriage but at least it will be a relatively short distance. After this final ride they should seriously consider permanently retiring that 4 tonnes weighing golden monstrosity to a museum. But perhaps I am taken it too far now Previous Message I think the trouble with this coronation is that we have the images of both the coronations of George VI and Elizabeth II. Both of them were grand events but of a different age. Charles seems to be focused on being a modern monarch. For a man in his 70's possibly not the smartest choice. I fear for those of us familiar with the previous 20th century coronations the event in a week might be disappointing. The glamour and grandeur of the previous events will have been exchanged for inclusivity and equality. If they really scrap the idea of other royals and nobles using coronets the one thing that reminded the newly anointed and crowned monarch that he is only the primus inter pares has been lost. Previous Message I've seen pics of HRH as Gold Stick in Waiting riding astride in white breeches and thigh boots - which would not be appropriate for inside the Abbey I think. Imagine the noise she would make walking down the aisle! Also seen a pic of her, standing, in trousers and ordinary shoes presumably, which would look much better inside the Abbey. Riding sidesaddle ["astride" edited out] is very unlikely for the Princess Royal but we never know. She could surprise us but I think the long skirt is not suited to walking because it is a strange shape. Not sure.

I haven't seen an invitation myself, but apparently the foreign royals will wear day-dress. I suspect this means there will be no tiaras other than possibly for the Queen´s ladies. Thus it will be similar to events in Australia, Canada etc when they have had state openings of parliament with only the royal entourage in gowns and tiaras. I have to say I am not surprised by this - among those attending very few will own formal wear or uniforms, even fewer grand jewels, and a modern dress-code is in line with who is actually invited to attend. But I am a bit disappointed the reception on the evening before is not a grand gala banquet. The late Queen Elizabeth hosted such a banquet for the Commonwealth leaders not that many years ago, and they could have hosted such a banquet now without embarrassing those attending the actual coronation. Previous Message Previous Message According to journalists who have apparently seen an invitation, the dress-code for guests is similar to that for the 2011 royal wedding: formal wear or uniform for men, day-dress with hats for ladies. The reception on the previous evening apparently states ´cocktail dress´ or something similar. Clearly there was another "document" accompanying the colourful invitation card we have all seen. I'd suggest there could have been different editions of that accompanying information according to category of guest. I doubt that all the honoured volunteers and so forth would be expected to appear in "formal wear or uniform". Lounge suits perhaps? I don't know the details of this sort of etiquette. Torkel - you probably do? Royal guests could well have received a different edition stating "decorations" etc and so on. In that way guest royals could demonstrate their support of the King.
