Ballad of the Sad Young Men
|
Oh this song is so special to me - it was the first song I ever heard this woman sing - I was age 15 and my sister had borrowed some albums from a neighbour to record on her brand new cassette recorder! One of the albums happened to be Shirley’s And I Love You So and I caught the tale end of this song - at that point I had no idea who Shirley Bassey was but it had a major impact on me, I immediately wanted more and became a live long admirer of her work and artistry. Magnificent song, magnificent singer. I have seen Shirley in concert so many times I have lost count - one of my regrets is not getting to hear her sing this particular song live - I believe she sang it at Hampton Court Palace when she did that series of open air concerts. You can also catch a live version on The Songs of Shirley Bassey - the 1979 Bassey on Broadway recording - the audience go wild. A wonderful recording as is that entire album which is still - to this day one of my favourites. Thanks for mentioning this superb and sublime recording. Mike K xx
