Classics I have watched this year:
Curse Of The Cat People (1944)- Very light. Good story about a ghost that is the protector of a little girl. Saw this on TCM a few weeks back.
The Spiral Staircase (1945)- A well known favorite I have seen a few times. Good mystery and atmosphere.
The Bat (1959)- Somewhat cheesy Vincent Price but I liked it pretty well.
Macabre (1958)- Early William Castle. Spooky. Black & White. What more do you need?
More Modern...
I recently watched the 2012 version of "The Woman In Black". It was ok but the very rare 1989 version is a lot better. Both are heavy on atmosphere and ghost stuff only. Nothing graphic.
If you want to truely get the pants scared off of you then I reccommend the original "Paranormal Activity" 2007. I sought it out earlier this year knowing that the storyline was simple and that it was all atmosphere and subtle scares. It was true to that but man that thing scared the crap out of me. I was watching it just before dark and had to shut it off as it got pretty ramped up. Finished it the next day but I did not sleep good for a week. Rare for a film to scare me but this one did and I have seen a LOT.
Think I'll stick back to the classics.
Hey Al, did you ever see a couple of my previous reccommendations?
Pit & The Pendulum (1961)
Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983)
Turning the tables...do you have any suggestions?
