When he was a kid he watched his mom and her under-the breath insults. A person would walk by, and she'd be nice to their face, but as they walked away she'd insult them in the same breath.
There's a bunch of these subtle but hilarious darts in his films. Often his wife was the target.

I have a 10 film dvd which if I recall was fairly cheap. Those 4 above were around 1933-35. His later films are good, what he's more famous for, just not my favorites. Man on the Flying Trapeze has nothing to do with the circus. Just a metaphor for his character's life.
