Point taken about certain of RVW's and Elgar's works not travelling as well, but to be fair Jeffrey does refer to two of his favourites as "lesser-known", whereas clearly the symphonies should have international appeal. Elgar seems gradually to be making that transition into the repertoire of orchestras outside the UK and Australia, whereas (admittedly, I don't have any stats) RVW seems to be lagging. I love some of the "Empire" stuff and don't see that it ages any worse than other "patriotic" music of, say, France (some Berlioz), Russia (Tchaikovsky 1812, Glinka Ruslan) and Italy (Verdi's earlier nationalistic operas- Attila, Nabucco et al), and I certainly wouldn't call Puccini, Palestrina, Monteverdi, Gesualdo, Respighi, the verismo operas etc,, "fresh and charming" - although a fair amount of Vivaldi and some lighter operas might fit that bill.
