One conductor who did not hesitate to perform British music abroad was Jeffrey Tate. He was a frequent conductor for RAI and Santa Cecilia and, without looking at the complete list, gave VW 5, Walton 1, most major orchestral Elgar, lots of Britten (not only the obvious things), also Holst's Ode to Death, Butterworth's A Shropshire Lad, all in Turin. These performances are periodically rebroadcast by RAI. Exactly how these pieces were received by the public I don't know, but his example hasn't produced a spate of new generation Italian conductors anxious to explore these works.
