Re: RVW Anniversary
Regarding RVW's exposure overseas, and as Australia has specifically been named in this thread, it's worth noting that in recent years English conductors such as Vernon Handley, Paul Daniel and Andrew Davis have been appointed to Australian orchestras, and naturally there has been some additional representation of English music. Without trawling through multitudinous concert programs, however, I couldn't say how much of that was RVW. I do though vividly recall that when Handley was appointed chief conductor of the West Australian SO in 1994, he bridled at any suggestion he was just an "English music specialist", and made sure his programs reflected anything but! Nevertheless, he did include works such as RVW's Sea Symphony, Walton's Belshazzar's Feast, and Holst's Planets. Previous Message Nick, I trust you realise that I am not saying that RVW should not have international appeal; what I mean by its not "travelling well" is that I wonder how often his music features on concert programmes outside the UK, because the examples you give refer to initial reception decades ago, not what happens now. Maybe readers abroad could enlighten us?
