They had to do so because Thanos was out of control and gone mad..he was berserk...so the goal was to hold him at bay so he wouldn't destroy the 616. Seeing as how they just spent the whole TI working (reluctantly though) with Thanos...I think theoretically if Thanos got himself together he wouldn't need to be "killed" or "terminated" to make their mission a success.
But yeah, as Bendis wrote it they just wanted to kill off Thanos and Rider woefully failed to trap him in the CV.
Maybe one day somebody has more to add to that tale...because there is plenty of room

: Last night I pulled out the episodes of Nova
: volume 4 which had Galactus and the Silver
: Surfer, and the Richard meeting cosmo.
: Volume 4 was so well written. I would say we
: didn't know what we had, but we actually
: absolutely knew how good we had it. This
: stuff was the best.
:
: Sometimes I wonder if the current Marvel
: execs have read this stuff. Because, if they
: did, we would see Dan Abnett writing Richard
: again. I just don't know what goes on in
: Marvel's collective heads. When I re-read
: this volume, I am dumbfounded how it was
: canceled.
