I must say I have never found a reliable source for the three choices story. Death duties An arrangement was reached between the government and George VI over death duties and his estate. No death duties payable if passed from sovereign to sovereign. The Queen Mother's was treated as the widow's estate under that arrangement, so hers passed to the Queen as well. There were reliable reports at the time. It did avoid forcing the sale of jewellery we view as essential to the reigning line of the family. That private collection would be decimated quickly if death duties had to be paid on the death of each sovereign. Speculation - A similar arrangement might apply today - perhaps relating only to the private property we identify with the reigning line. If so, then Charles would inherit all the jewels we pore over, and the majority in the QD by the way, and he would lend pieces to ladies of his choice. ...EDIT: ... observing and respecting wishes expressed by previous kings and queens.
