I cannot remember the source, that give the real story of Diana's ring. But from what I can recall it was a reliable source.
It argued that Prince Charles chose the ring, prior to proposing to Diana, selecting the well known sapphire and diamond ring from Garrard.
One of the key points in the story of her engagement ring, and the fact that Diana didn't chose it; was that Diana herself has been quoted as saying that if she had the choice, she would have chosen something much plainer and simpler.
I believe the story of Diana selecting the ring from a tray and stating "it wasn't the biggest by far!" (as stated by Field), is the same as the story of Kate Middleton having three tiaras to chose from; it was a "news" story written at the time of the royal wedding in 1981, when they was an appetite for all things royal, yet no new information released. Thus the newspapers conjured up stories that have been perpetuated.
Furthermore, it is of note that Diana's engagement ring was not a unique or bespoke piece. The Garrard catalogue from 1981, shows that it retailed at £28,500.
I will try and find the original source for this account.
