Although I agree with you that these two incredible displays of opulence were not the cause of the downfall of the regime I do believe the oil crisis alone can't be pointed out as the single cause either. As in many of these cases there were many socio-economic factors which caused a situation in which an economic downturn created so much unrest and resentment that the regime finally lost its grip.
On a more On Topic Note: I personally never cared much for the designs by Van Cleef & A of these and other jewels. Somehow they are too theatrical to me. My personal taste though.

: The coronation was not very expensive (the
: jewels were made with stones from the
: National Treasury) and the Persepolis
: celebrations were an unique opportunity to
: show the Iranian history to the world and to
: improve the diplomatic relations of Iran
: with the most important countries of the
: world (representatives from the West and

: The Pahlavi dynasty is true that is not very
: ancient, but the first Pahlavi shah was Reza
: Khan, a military appointed by the Majlis
: (Iranian parliament) shah of Persia in 1925.
    :
: The oil crisis of 1973 was the principal
: cause of the downfall of the Pahlavi dynasty
: because of the fact that it generated a very
: high rate of inflation and, consequently,
: the empoverishment of the Iranian
    : population.

: Both the Coronation as well Persepolis,
: respectively 1967 and 1971, were before the
: world wide oil crisis of 1973.
    :
: Remains: a theatre with a diamond encrusted
: Peacock Throne, a Shahbanou with sapphires
: as big as our eyeballs popping out. And that
: in a -to western standards- underdeveloped
: country. And by an "imperial"

: I really love a good show. On the right time
: and in the right place that is. The Shah had
: to avoid this. This was deadly for his
: reputation. A good reputation comes by feet
: and runs away on horseback. The Iranians I
: know, very opposing the present Islamist
: regime, are as negative towards the
: Pahlavis. There is no love lost, is my
    : impression.
