Some info for you. Prince Karl of Hesse died 1877 and Victoria of Hesse married in 1884, so the emerald jewellery would have been wedding gifts from his widow Elizabeth of Prussia, Victoria's paternal grandmother. You say the brooch was worn by Queen Louise of Sweden. Might there be a photo of her wearing it please? --Previous Message-- : Hello Nellie : : I have worked with Ursula on researching the : jewels given as wedding gifts to Princess : Victoria of Hesse. The tiara portrayed in : the links below is not an amethyst and : diamond tiara given to the bride by the : Queen Dowager of Bavaria, rather it is the : sapphire and diamond tiara given to the : Princess by her in-laws, Prince Alexander of : Hesse and Princess Julie of Battenberg. : : The identification of the tiara as being the : gift of the Dowager Queen is based upon an : illustration from The Graphic (10 May 1884 : p6). However, in the following week's : edition of the The Graphic (17 May 1884 p8) : the following correction appeared: : : NOTE--In our engraving last week of the : wedding presents of the Princess of : Battenberg, the illustration entitled : "Tiara of Diamonds and Amethysts, the : Gift of Queen Marie of Bavaria," should : have been described as "Tiara of : Diamonds and Sapphires, the Gift of the : Bridegrooms' Parents." : : Queen Victoria recorded in her journal that : Princess Victoria wore the diamond and : sapphire tiara, the gift of her : parents-in-law, with her late mother's : wedding veil on her wedding day. : : Ursula is very busy at the moment and hasn't : had time to update her pages to reflect my : latest research. It was quite exciting to : find the correction. : : Laura : : : http://www.royal-magazin.de/england/battenberg-milford-haven/milford-haven-jewels.htm : : : http://www.royal-magazin.de/england/battenberg-milford-haven/victoria-hessen-tiara.htm : : : --Previous Message-- : : Ursula has a number of pages that are : relevant I believe.
