Thanks Boffer - but plastic surprises me !! Things sweat in plastic. And each pearl and emerald does have a metal attachment to it.
I'd have thought a soft natural fibre lining for each pouch would be wiser. But I'm no jewellery expert!

I'm sure I could design a fitted case to keep each pearl or emerald secure in its individual slot in case a case was dropped.

I was thinking of practices in Russia when I had named Dmitry in my posting. I still wonder if the pouch idea originated in Russia or was widely used there.

Finally, it is continually surprising the little details that emerge every so often about inportant jewels !!!

: Pouches are used, as although a fitted case
: would look more "smart", for
: practical reasons, if a case was to be
: dropped or knocked, it is very easy for the
: contents to become mixed up and jumbled
    : amongst their fitted compartments.
    :
: There is no way the pearls, or emeralds can
: escape from their pouches - avoiding any
: confusion and also this further protects the
: stones as they cannot be bumped or knocked
: together, thus avoiding being damaged in
    : anyway - these pouches are in-turn
: themselves kept in compartments of the
    : tiara-box.
    :
: You will also notice that they are nowadays
: kept in small plastic bags which are then
: kept inside the pouches - this is to further
: protect the gem stones from any kind of
: environmental damage - such as fibres or
    : moisture.

: Dmitry - would you know why pouches were
: used rather than a fitted case each for the
    : pearls and the emeralds?
