Yes indeed. Well the protestant faith restricted the choices somewhat. The dynasty was rather fragile at times and only became more prominent in 1813 with the establishment of a proper monarchy and a sizeable country with dito colonial assets.
The UK survived the madness of King George but the Orange-Nassau dynasty almost went up in smoke because of all the antics of our King Gorilla. Fortunately his last drop saved the day.

    : I know.
    :
: It's curious because the Dutch RF didn't
: make a great varieaty of alliances with the
: grand dynasties of the Continent, with the
: exception of Prussia, Russia, the UK and
: Sweden, but the marriage of Queen Wilhelmina
: with Duke Heinrich of Mecklenburg links
: Queen Beatrix to the Count of Paris, the
: Duchess of Württemberg, the Duchess of
: Calabria and the future Duke of Aosta, f.eg.
: The last King of Portugal was also a
: relative, as a Mecklenburg descendant.
    :
: The marriage of Princess Louise with King
: Carl XV of Sweden also makes the Danish and
: Greek Queens Orange descendants, as well as
: the Belgian, Luxembourgian and Norwergian
: Sovereigns, not to mention members of the
    : Houses of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg,
    : Schaumburg-Lippe and Castell-Castell.
    :
: The marriage of Queen Juliana to Prince
: Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld also makes
: Queen Beatrix a direct relative to Archduke
    : Karl of Austria.
    :
: Interesting things that those 'non-equal'
    : alliances won't improve.

: Yes but now they are related to Bakers and
    : Electricians!
    :
: But seriously, the O-N are also related to
: the Imperial family of Russia through Prince
    : Hendrik of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Somehow
: that always seems to slip our minds.
    :
: Hendrik's great grandmother was Helena
    : Pavlovna (1784-1803) a sister of Catharina
: Pavlova and Anna Pavlovna. The latter was
: the grandmother of Queen Wilhelmina.

: It's rather nice to see how the marriage
: between Princess Irene and the late Duke
: Carlos Hugo links the present Duke of Parma
: to the former Russian Imperial Family.
    :
: A shame these genealogical links will 'fade
: away' with the future generations.
