Torkel - I am still searching Australian sources. I can let you know that the Queensland people gave her three yellow sapphires. "Her Royal Highness seemed very pleased with the present." Edit: there were other gifts of jewels so I will see what I can compile from it all. Edit 2: Her dresses were almost entirely black, a little white trim, and some white skirts for the tropics. The trimmings were jet and black roses, carnations and cherries. A belt buckle of violet enamel. I have a long description of possibly every day and evening dress she wore. I will post it if there is any interest. It describes all the detailed designing and trimming that went into a mourning wardrobe. What a lot of effort for mostly black. --Previous Message-- : Thank you all for the input. The royal family : was constantly in mourning back in the early : 20th century. The mourning period for Queen : Victoria was a whole year, and the court : often went into mourning for a couple or : three weeks for continental royals distantly : related to the British royals. : Thus the royal ladies would have had lots of : mourning jewellery which we hardly ever see : today. : : I wonder - seeing how this was such an : important occasion for the young Australian : nation - whether there might be any pictures : in Australian archives?
