Meylan's book is very readable; as all of his work is. It's the first book on the history of Mellerio, which spans 400 years and includes every single Queen and Empress of France, it's impossible to come up with a comprehensible catalogue of 400 years of production by Mellerio. Naturally one focuses on the most important clients and their commissions, which are indeed in the book. Jewels are wonderful to look at, but a book with text on many jewels itself would be a bit tedious. It's the stories of the lives of the clients in relation to the house that make the book the book interesting. You can't evaluate a book based on a book you'd rather have seen. Those are 2 different works and perhaps a good idea for a later project.
