Re: 'Rubies' in necklace worn by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother Archived Message

    I am intrigued.
Neither Queen Alexandra or Queen Mary was ever photographed wearing these 'ruby' jewels.
If the jewels existed in their present form, why wouldn't either have used such a spectacular necklace and the brooches - even if they didn't wear long earrings or favour the design of the tiara?
I have read the explanation that Queen Mary didn't favour rubies; yet, she has been photographed wearing the Rose of York bracelet and the King gave her large ruby earring which she gave to the Crown.
Field says that Queen Alexandra used rubies given to her and to Queen Victoria; however, I have not found any evidence of Queen Victoria wearing jewels with large rubies, and the stones seem too well matched to have come in piecemeal - so as to speak.

Is there any definite evidence prior to the time QEQM became Queen Consort that the jewels had been reset by Queen Alexandra?

: Oh yes Joye. Thanks for the reminder. I
: always smile at the "Mummy"

: I recall thinking when it was reported that
: the Oriental Circlet was chiefly concerned,
: because we saw it worn so often.
    :
: I always imagine that representatives of
: both households probably held some earnest
: discussions, but so many of the heirlooms of
: the Crown stayed with the Queen Mother
    : regardless.

: These rubies are The Crown Rubies. The Queen
: Mother held onto them until her death. The
: Queen was said to say Mummy will give them
    : back.

: Beth, I think it would be this necklace you
    : write about?
: I had never thought about the size of the

: has resurrected a query I have always had
: regarding the 'rubies' in the necklace QEQM
: so frequently wore with the Oriental circlet
    : tiara.
: The stones seem to be very evenly matched
: for colour and their size would make them
: outstanding, if they were rubies.
: It is said that Queen Alexandra exchanged
: the opals in QV's necklace and tiara for
: rubies. Unless the setting was changed
: completely, I think it would be very
: difficult to find so many large rubies of
: the required sizes which matched.
: If Queen Victoria had large rubies, I
: suspect she would have had them set in
: various pieces of jewellery. The only ruby
: jewels I am aware she had have small rubies.
: Even the rubies in the jewellery belonging
: to Grand Duchess Marie of Russia (Duchess of
: Edinburgh), were not of a great size. Her
: father, the Emperor would have had the
: resources to purchase large rubies, if large
    : matched rubies were available.
: I have often wondered if the rubies in the
: necklace worn by QEQM are spinels.
: What do other posters think?
: Does anyone have an image of QV wearing the
: Opal necklace? I have only seen an image of
: the brooch which she wore with the Oriental
    : circlet.
