Thank you Joye and Nellie. I appreciate your assistance. My edition of Field's book was published in 1987 and does not mention the date when Queen Alexandra changed the stones, so I am grateful for that information, Joye. I am still intrigued, but I suspect no definite answer can be obtained. I suspect that, if the stones are not rubies, then they are either spinels or Rubelites.
