I wonder if, based on Mauriz's account of this custom, it is a forerunner or similar custom to the North American custom of "throwing the garter" at weddings. I am sure this has some historical basis. The custom is now a purely symbolic tradition in that the garter in question is usually non-functional but often highly decorative made of satin and lace (although not often bejewelled...at least not in our circle of friends!)
