Thanks Nellie for the excellent link. This is the best version I've seen of the picture. I think it shows that the central stone is at the left hand edge of the cloak with another stone completely under the cloth. Sometimes photos come to light of the artist's sittings; it's only then that we can be really sure. --Previous Message-- : : Scroll down a bit in this story : : : http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-2148710/Queens-Diamond-Jubilee-2012-She-brushes-The-worlds-famous-woman--world-famous-artists.html : : : --Previous Message-- : : In the portrait the Queen clearly wears a : brooch not a necklace. : It could be the central section of Queen : Victoria's Diamond and Pearl necklace but I : have never seen that necklace taken apart. : I would say instead it is Queen Alexandra's : Wedding brooch, as seen yesterday, but worn : vertically with a pearl hanging from the : end. : : : --Previous Message-- : : I was not entirely confident about the : Jubilee brooch. : : : --Previous Message-- : Hmm - can't agree with that, I'm afraid. I : don't think it looks the right shape at all. : It reminds me of something else but I just : can't place it at the moment. : : --Previous Message-- : : If you do a google images search for Norman : Hepple you should find a portrait in which : the Queen wears her Vladimir Tiara with : pearls. : In the gap between the ends of her Boat : Cloak I would suggest HMQ wears the Queen : Alexandra Wedding brooch vertically with a : pearl hanging from the end. : Obviously the Queen didn't really take to : this fabulous brooch and having worn it at : Versailles in 1972 I think something else : was tried. : The portrait's date of 1974 seems to fit : perfectly. : Some might say that the Queen wears the : centre of her Diamond and Pearl Jubilee : necklace in the portrait, but I think not. : : : : : --Previous Message-- : : Laura is perfectly correct! : : Queen Mary retained ownership of the brooch : and earrings to the parure, the Queen : inherited them in 1953, thus bypassing Queen : Elizabeth completely, which is a little : strange as she wore the necklace almost : continuously throughout her life as Queen : Consort and Queen Mother. : --Previous Message-- : Hi Bryce : : Your picture of Queen Elizabeth the Queen : Mother is not Queen Alexandra's brooch. : Rather it is the turquoise brooch that she : received as a wedding gift. : : Laura : : : : : : : : : : : :
