    Re: Rubies. Archived Message

Is there any photographic evidence of these jewels (the tiara, necklace and pair of earrings) being opals originally? I would like to see such a picture of it just to compare what they looked like (while Queen Victoria was alive) and what the current settings look like now. I wonder which one looks better than the other one.

: These are the so called "Crown
: Rubies". The necklace and earrings
: were made for Queen Victoria
: (QV) and originally contained opals as the
: main stones. QV left these jewels to the
    : Crown.
    :
: Queen Alexandra thought opals unlucky and
: swapped them out for rubies (she did the
: same to the Oriental Circlet as seen in your
    : pictures).
    :
: These were some of the jewels that The Queen
: let her mother continue to use until her
    : death in 2002

: The source did not state the origins of this
: pair of ruby and diamond earrings & the
: ruby and diamond necklace, but the Queen
: Mother apparently had worn them a long time
: ago (as HM the Queen).
    :
: The source is from a book in my collection:
    : "Royal Souvenirs" by Geoffrey
    : Warren (pub. in 1977).

    :
: Another time in a different evening gown
: but again wore this ruby and diamond
: necklace & pair of earrings {and the
    : same tiara as well}:

: To collaborate Merlin's reply, I too believe
: they are the Crown Ruby earrings. Here are
    : a couple more pix.

: Quite unusual, wearing the rubies with a
    : diamond tiara.
: She did it again in the 1990s.

: Can anyone identify the earrings for me
    : please? Probably December 1953.
