One of the most telling things - to my way of thinking - is that Queen Mary did not wear the Coronation diamond pendant earrings at her Coronation. We all know that Queen Mary liked pearls; yet, I have never seen photos of her wearing Queen Victoria's large pear shaped drop pearl earrings either. As far as I know, the ladies of the British Royal family didn't use wire frames behind their ears to assist with the weight of heavy earrings, as was common in some other countries. The weight of heavy drop earrings has a tendency to create elongated openings at the point of piercings, and perhaps it was this that the King disliked. If Queen Mary did have the Duchess of Gloucester's pearl pendant earrings re-set with diamond tops (as they are today), it is possible that she wore them after the King's death - that is just speculation by me.
