I had not paid attention to this aspect of Queen Mary's jewellery, but you are right, Beth1: all the pictures I have show Queen Mary wearing button-type or cluster-type earrings, and never pendant earrings.

I do not know if it was a mere matter of personal taste, or for esthetic reasons.

That did not prevent her from ending up with very elongated earlobes anyway!

Regarding the earrings worn at the Devonshire House Ball, I can not identify them, unfortunately.

: One of the most telling things - to my way of
: thinking - is that Queen Mary did not wear
: the Coronation diamond pendant earrings at
    : her Coronation.
    :
    : We all know that Queen Mary liked pearls;
: yet, I have never seen photos of her wearing
: Queen Victoria's large pear shaped drop
    : pearl earrings either.

: As far as I know, the ladies of the British
: Royal family didn't use wire frames behind
: their ears to assist with the weight of
: heavy earrings, as was common in some other
: countries. The weight of heavy drop earrings
: has a tendency to create elongated openings
: at the point of piercings, and perhaps it
: was this that the King disliked.
    :
: If Queen Mary did have the Duchess of
    : Gloucester's pearl pendant earrings re-set
: with diamond tops (as they are today), it is
: possible that she wore them after the King's
: death - that is just speculation by me.
