Hello Nellie, Memory is a funny thing and so I do not recollect precisely how thick the shells were, but they were thinish. Definitely not a quarter of an inch. Perhaps only half of that or less. I do recollect that the shells of the giant clams, which were the most popular ornaments at the bottom of stairs etc, were also very much under a quarter of an inch thick. No doubt there are now website which will give some indication of the thickness of the shells which Queenslanders, like myself, all took for granted years ago. My apologies to all - but I am trying to judge things from my childhood. Apologise that I cannot give precise estimates - the shells were only millimeters thick - but the shells were very hardy/strong. I was one of those children who used to stand on them to climb up the railings of stairs!!
