I wonder if the following gives us any clues about when Queen Mary acquired the jewels http://www.royalcollection.org.uk/collection/search#/21/collection/421979/bracelet-with-a-miniature-of-queen-adelaide where the Royal Collection site says that Queen Mary purchased from her brother a bracelet with a portrait of Queen Adelaide in 1919. Two possible scenarios might explain the date. 1 Prince Adolphus might have had money invested in Germany which he lost - so he might have needed money to live. 2 By 1919 he had lost his title of Prince and perhaps he and his wife felt that they no longer had any need for grand jewels. (I personally feel that the loss of status as a Prince would not have prompted a sale) It is also possible that after her brother (or his heir) decided to sell the jewels, Queen Mary, who was known to collect items associated with the royal family, may have wanted to preserve her mother's jewels in the main line of the family. That Queen Mary gave the tiara and necklace to QEQM and not any other of her daughters-in-law could support that idea. Edit: I don't subscribe to the idea that Queen Mary went around trying to get people "to donate" coveted items to her - so I am not suggesting that she somehow convinced her brother to give the jewels to her, either as a gift or by purchase.
