I love the timbre of her voice now. However, I dont think she is maximizing this gift. There are so many lovely standards and classic songs that she could really score with -- anything Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Michel Legrand, etc. I think of her lovely, restrained, unhurried recording of "Call Me" and feel like she could sing that just as well today.
Also, I think there is an almost suffocating melancholy woven throughout this CD. 83 and still sounding glorious?! Why doesn't she sound more triumphant and celebratory. She is SHIRLEY BASSEY, after all. I wish there was more ebullience radiating from the stereo right now. I am responding most to the upbeat numbers -- "You Ain't Heard Nothing Yet", "Almost Like Being In Love" and "Music."
OK, so that's it. It is very listenable and I am deliriously happy to have a NEW Shirley Bassey recording. I almost feel like I don't deserve her...almost
