Just wanted to see if anyone has any thoughts surrounding how the current BLM movement, and consequent removal of programmes like ‘Little Britain’ etc, could potentially affect a production of Aladdin?
Obviously we all tend to avoid the obvious issues - eg the Policeman being called ‘Ping or Pong’, but are there any other things that you think may not sit right in the current climate?
Does poor, penniless Widow Twankey running a laundry become a stereotype? Should ensemble wearing black bob wigs be avoided? What about oriental music stings? Obviously the origins of the story lie in the eastern setting so you could only go so far in changing things, but where do you draw the line before the show becomes impossible to produce and should maybe be avoided all together?
Not trying to start any arguments or commenting on the rights or wrongs of everything that’s going on, but genuinely interested in people’s thoughts!
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!
