I believe that it was either Rossini who wrote the now neglected masterpiece "Il bravo prematuro, ossia L'esclamazione indesiderato" soon to be released by Opera Rara.
The most precious example of indispensable audience response I know of is when in the 1953 live Mitropoulos recording of "La forza del destino" Mario Del Monaco has finished singing "O tu che in seno agli angeli" like an immortal and the audience are so overcome that they start mooing like demented cattle, prior, I assume, to ripping up a few seats and applying smelling salts to those matrons who have succumbed to an excess of sentiment. That is most certainly part of the enjoyment of that performance but otherwise those who race to be the first to voice approval should be hoiked out of their seats and gently boiled in oil....
