Perhaps this reflects the fact that, in case of vintage recordings (say 1960s or earlier) the number of people who heard the artist 'live' must be very few. Therefore, the claims of re-issue producers to 'know' the kind of sound the artist wanted must be treated with some scepticism.
As far the ordinary collector is concerned, I suspect their judgements are based on what sound pleases them, rather than any objective criteria (which is not necessarily a bad thing).
