Morning all
To get back to Rouvali. I have been a Berglund man for Sibelius but find Rouvali, especially in the new 4th absolutely excellent. A very different interpretation from PB, more direct and dynamic but totally convincing. Fabulous playing and recording. There is room for both ways, very refreshing. The substantial filler, The Wood Nymph, gets the performance of a lifetime, totally putting Vanska into the shade.
I very much am looking forward to the completion of his cycle, 6th, 7th (and Tapiola?).
P.s. DH is an opinionated, tone deaf idiot!
All reviews must be interpreted in light of our own personal tastes. You will never agree with a single reviewer 100% of the time. What's more, I would never rely on a single review to guide my music purchases. I read enough reviews of both the Makela and the Rouvali recordings to decide not to go there. Not because they were "bad" but because I didn't feel that they offered anything better than the recordings (already too many) I already had. I did buy the YNS 3/4 but I haven't come to a final conclusion yet on how "good" it is compared to others. Unlike you, I have always liked the 4th Symphony so it is likely our tastes differ on this piece.
BTW, Mr. Hurwitz absolutely did not like the YNS recording of Sibelius' 1st Symphony.
