Re: Mäkelä's and Rouvali's Sibelius
Down I go down the rabbit hole of the Sibelius 5. I've spent the day listening to my scores of recordings, though today just the final movement. I like Makela; like you said, well recorded and interesting. But the winner is Rouvali. I have loved the Swan theme, and though Rouvali is more urgent in the opening, when the theme comes, he brings out all the majesty and power, an extra frisson. This is one symphony that requires exceptional recording; that's why so many don't make the cut for me, though I like everything else. So Rouvali for the 5th. I like Segerstam too; and Bernstein late; and the Karajan late Phil. I hear my late departed mother in law saying, "How VERY gracious!"
