“We still have vehicles stranded on the roads on I22 and I55. 51 has mostly resolved itself. The problem is 18 wheelers. We had drivers unhitch their trailers and leave them on the interstate in the road, we had truck drivers stop to look at the conditions and not be able to get back going, our crews just ran into an 18 wheeler on the interstate who’s blocking traffic and they woke the driver up an he said he didn’t feel safe driving so he parked it in the middle of 55 and went to bed….
Either way, our chief engineer is on his way up now with our district engineers and crews from far south Mississippi. We have contractors bringing milling machines used to tear up pavement with the hope that it will break the ice up so we can plow it.
2) The national guard went out last night and even some of their military vehicles struggled with traction.
3) We are deploying all of our chemical (salt and others) from South Mississippi to the north, too.
4) The best thing is for people to stay off the road. Yesterday, I watched a tow truck block the only cleared lane of 55N to remove a commercial vehicle that was 50 feet off the road and not a safety hazard. It blocked traffic, caused wrecks and miles of traffic backups.”
