Delta-sorry this took so long to share-My Mom’s Custard pie recipe… Posted by Cindy on 11/15/2025, 9:38 pm Old Fashioned Egg Custard Pie 1 Nine inch pie shell (unbaked) 3 eggs 2 cups milk-scalded 1/2 cup sugar 1/8 tsp salt 1 tsp vanilla 2-3 tsps of melted butter Ground nutmeg Prepare pie shell and set aside (I used a frozen premade one) Beat eggs until light and foamy Add scalded milk (cooled), sugar, salt and vanilla Brush inside of pie shell with the melted butter Pour custard into the pie shell and sprinkle with nutmeg Bake at 450 for 10 minutes and then reduce heat to 325 and bake for 20-30 minutes until pie tests done by putting a knife in the center of pie and it comes out clean.

It looks nice and simple, just the way Grandma and Grandpa cooked it. The strange thing is that I never saw my Grandpa cook until after Grandma passed away. He managed to cook simple things for himself then, but occasionally, when Grandma wasn't feeling well, he would go into the kitchen and cook a custard pie. I don't know if he was trying to perk her up or himself. Probably both. Neither of them ever measured; they just poured until it was "right".

A lot (well almost all) of mom’s recipes were a pinch of this or some other wild measurement until it looked right and it always turned out great! My mom was a great cook!
