Quick run by Posted by Krista on 3/13/2026, 8:15 am Dad is walking entire distance of floor so that's good. Wound vac still on. Way less pain meds. Still feels "bound up". Next step they are talking about is rehab. Dad is dead set against it. Said they are sending him there to die even when they explain what it is. Says the surgeons messed up his surgery due to need for wound vac and 2 1/2 weeks in hospital when most people can "walk out of the room of surgery" (what first doc told us) He is very depressed. Paul is considering taking him home he feels he will do better there. Mentally this is taking it's toll. Can't speak reason to Dad at all - I believe he's just mentally exhausted and can't think straight. Cancer doc knows he is there - we're hoping she will pop in even to give him some words about next steps. Dad just wants to be home.

Ken did a week of rehab on the hospitals’ rehab floor and then went home and had a Physical therapist, an occupational therapist, a Speech therapist and a nurse come out each week to work with him. Insurance paid for it. All we needed was the doctors orders. If he’s hell bent on going home it would be great to have this if you can. It would help Paul out a lot. The Occupational therapist will work with him on showering and taking care of himself. I think Ken ended up with 8 weeks of PT. As long as your dad continues to get better they continue to come out. Once he has gotten as strong as he is going to get their services fade out. It’s worth asking about. You don’t want your dad falling and breaking another bone! So glad he is walking more. That’s fantastic!

Yes and already coming Posted by Krista on 3/14/2026, 8:08 am, in reply to "Does Canada…." They have been coming since last Spring so that's blessing! It's called Extra Mural care and he has nurses that take his blood, check his vitals and a physiotherapist who will work with him and is excellent.

I don't like him going home with a wound vac because it is such a good site for infection and being a man he probably won't stay on top of it like Paula did. I understand his thinking because my mother thought the same thing after her hip surgery. After she saw the place and met some of the people she felt a lot better about it because the one she was in was more like a luxury retreat where you just happened to have to exercise a few times a day. She enjoyed her time there and it was a lot easier to get her into a rehab after that. If you have a good one it might help to take him on a tour. Might not, he is a man. I hope that function is restored to his colon soon but that is part of surgery at his age too. Praying.

Pain meds will bind you up Posted by Paula on 3/13/2026, 9:47 am, in reply to "Quick run by" They gave me something to help every day J was in the hospital. I still needed a suppository and a nurse had to glove up and help get it out one day. I know, TMI! Hope he goes to rehab but it doesn't sound likely. I think it's great that he is walking that far after all he's been through. It's exhausting for all of you, I know.

The only thing they haven't done yet IS the enema. He doesn't feel like he is passing anything but they tell him, he is. We're worried it's related to the cancer - him not being able to feel relief. 2 weeks plus out now

I hope you can explain to your dad now days rehab is the place where he can get care and PT and get stronger to go home. It's transitional. I am praying for you and all of your family.

I can't .... Posted by Krista on 3/13/2026, 2:56 pm, in reply to "Krista" He doesn't listen to anything I say as I wouldn't have any way of knowing. I have asked 2 of the physio people to explain to him also but I don't think he trusts anyone. It's quite sad.
