A garden party is an excellent idea. Will costs the British taxpayer much less than the currently anticipated opulent ordeal.
Oh, so strings of pearls, hats, and brooches. How excruciating, might as well be a garden party.
I fully concur. A 1953 - rather over the top - scenario is unthinkable this day and age. I am sure and glad Charles will have a more modern approach to all this while keeping enough tradition and ceremony to satisfy the media and drama addicted masses. In short: keep it short and sweet with less emphasis on the old aristocracy and privileged royalty but more on todays modern 'nobles' who make a real difference in this world. If that means less bejewelled women, no gilded coronets and smelly robes. Soit.
I am interested in and appreciative of the history offered by commenters here. But I'm surprised to see the discussion of tiara possibilities for the May 6 coronation of King Charles III. With the announcements so far of reducing the number of woriking royals, a smaller ceremony with only a portion of the current peers and MPs in attendance, many seats being reserved for members of charitable organizations and the National Health Service, etc., it is jarring to imagine Queen Elizabeth's granddaughters, cousins, or members of foreign royal families wearing tiaras. If I had to make a prediction, I'd imagine just Charles and Camilla wearing crowns/tiaras. Maybe, at a stretch, the Princess of Wales, Princess Royal, and other female working royals. Not only is it to be a modernized ceremony, but also the British Royal family has several delicate dilemmas of status and inclusion among the King's brothers, sons, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, various in-laws, former in-laws, and so on. It risks distraction from the solemnity of the coronation event itself. I would, rather, imagine some version of the dress used for the State Opening of Parliament... It's certainly beguiling to imagine displays of all the royal jewels. But I don't think it's what Charles and his advisers have been signaling. I'd be interested in other commenters' thoughts.
I am already imagining what the various royal ladies will wear, here are some of my guesses. PS, remember it isn’t customary for sovereigns to attend, so these ladies will represent along with their husbands.
The Crown Princess of Denmark: The Danish ruby parure.
The Crown Princess of Norway: Queen Maud’s diamond and pearl tiara (modified version)
The Crown Princess of Sweden: The Connaught Tiara
The Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg: The Belgian Scroll tiara
what else might we see at the coronation? And will the young Duchess of Brabant, Princess of The Asturias, and Princess of Orange possibly be old enough to attend for their parents?
