Increasingly we are seeing royal ladies wearing costume jewels to accessorise their dresses and, if the information we have recently had about the Belgian royal ladies is correct, many are wearing substitutes for real jewels - and often borrowed jewels. While I would like to think of royal ladies wearing grand gems, does it really matter? I wonder if we should not sometimes concentrate on the style rather than the historical provenance or the actual value of the jewels. After all, ladies such as the Empress Eugenie wore jewels which complemented their robes, even though most of these were very valuable gems. Having said all that, I still believe that tracing the origins of jewels or their passage through families and when various royal ladies wear them is fascinating and a worthwhile activity.
