Torkel, I too was under the impression that QEII wore the Diamond Diadem only to and from the opening of parliament; however, I have identified 2 other occasions when she wore it. For the Opera gala during the French State visit in 1960 and also for a meeting of the Commonwealth, also in 1960, I think.
HM has worn the jewel for numerous official photographs and portraits, but she does seem to reserve it for only the most significant events, such as the opening of parliament.

I should have acknowledged that it was Arthur's second photo in this link http://members2.boardhost.com/royal-jewels/msg/1418890114.html which provided me with the knowledge that QEII had worn the Diamond Diadem for the 1960 French State visit. Prior to that, I had always assumed the jewel was worn only to and from the opening of parliament and for official photos.
