I seem to recall reading in a magazine that these aquamarine pieces were an engagement present from the Prince Consort, but it might have been mere speculation from the magazine. Miss Donaldson received a gold bangle with a pearl as an engagement present from Queen Margrethe (who had previous owned the piece), so they probably gave separate gifts, which might also explain the relatively low prize. --Previous Message-- : Thank you very much, Christian. : : About the "cheap" price: the : choker is made with cultured pearls (if I : well understand the caption in the auction : catalogue), and not with natural pearls, : whereas aquamarines are not the most : expensive of semi-precious stones. And this : aquamarine is of a very pale blue, whereas I : think that aquamarines with a more intense : colour are most expensive. So I understand : that the price was not that high. I do not : suggest that the jewels presented to Mary : are of low quality, but they are not of the : higest quality either. : : :
